![]() Punishment = decrease Positive reinforcement is the idea that you ADD something in order to INCREASE a behavior. ![]() Positive and negative are not used in ABA to describe good or bad, so let’s get into some specific examples. Now, don’t let the language we use fool you. In ABA, we operate on the principles of positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment. Both reinforcement and consequences are factors in our everyday life whether we recognize them or not. Reinforcement is the cornerstone of all strong and effective ABA practices. What is the difference between REINFORCEMENT + PUNISHMENT? To start, reinforcers can be any item, activity, and/or social response that increase the chance of behavior occurrence which follows the child’s behavior and can be used to strengthen desired behaviors or to help teach new skills.įocus on the child’s appropriate behaviors instead of the maladaptive behaviors that need to decrease or be eliminatedĮmphasis should be placed on the daily skills that are within the child’s capabilities but are not consistently performed independently Let’s focus on what reinforcement is and how it works. Some common challenges to reinforcement for parents are that some will say “nothing” is an effective reinforcer for their child or that they have tried reinforcement in the past and it “didn’t work”.
